His brother had attended this school, once upon a time. Navy remembers the look on Gabriel Navidson’s face, looking out from behind academia’s gilded walls. Outside lay the whole world and here he was, trapped here.[break][break]
As he stands amidst a squall of talking young folk, he wonders if someone gave his brother the same spiel. Again and again and again people come up to him. Many want an autograph. Some ask questions. Most of the time, Navy ends up handing out pamphlets. Shuwen, his Urshifu, has an armful of them for those more interested in window shopping. The Urshifu’s prominent burn scars draw a few concerned looks, which makes Navy happy.[break][break]
If the League, at this eleventh hour, would still have him stand here and sell recruitment to the young, he would have them see the realities of warfare. Between Shuwen’s burns and his own scars, mostly shallow knife wounds across the cheeks, he thinks he gets the message across. Even still, he gives his spiel to any brave enough to pass by.[break][break]
“Lookin’ for a career in law enforcement or the military?” His tone is light, friendly, asking a noncommittal question. He addresses the latest in a line of folk to pass by his booth, wondering if they’ll stick around or merely press on.

Vespa's interest in her own future is ... limited, to say the least. There is a mixture between not wanting to leave the comfort of her school days and her father's care, as well as the immediate urge to be free of those ghastly shackles. It is weird. And apparently, it's really only going to get worse, lest she maybe hyperfixates on something like her father did on history. "Makes life more ... fun, I guess," he once said with a shrug. She doesn't believe him.[break]

So, she needs more intel.[break]
[break]
Her school's career day seems just the right place to gather some, so she is up and going to ... well. What, actually? She never did actual 'field research', or 'questionnaires', only ever faked the statistics she needs. So ... uh ... uh ... She looks around, trying to find someone interesting enough to approach - and - wait. Err. That's a face she (maybe) knows. She goes over to the Elite Four member, waiting until the line subsides a little until it's her turn to ... wait. Right. She doesn't actually have a clue, and the Grookey nestled on her shoulders, making a small mess of her hair doesn't help.[break]

Thusly, she does what she does best: Improvise. With crossed arms and curious eyes, she inquires, "so ... is entertaining the youth actually part of your job description?"

She is met with the same warm hint of a smile as those who came before her. Navy looks Vespa over in his peripheral vision, something picked up in another life when investigation put food on the table. What he sees is someone, at a glance, more like himself than Gabe. It makes him decide he can be a little more forthright than he would have been with the more starry eyed students in the school.[break][break]
“Nah. That’s the gym leaders. The youth don’t usually make it to Ever Grande, despite what the movies tell you.” Movies frame the trainer’s journey as something young trainers go on, winning their badges and claiming the glory of a champion’s belt. Navy can’t think of a champion rank trainer under twenty-five, a sad fact of life during wartime.[break][break]
“But my kid brother went to school here, so when they asked someone to man the booth, raised my hand and told ‘em I’d be here.” There’s something unsaid. Anyone else would have sincere interest in playing the part of the pied piper for those on the edge of adulthood. The military, bottomless abyss of stride and trauma that it is, would swallow up a few more souls.[break][break]

“Cute Grookey. What’s their name?” He segueways away from himself, eyes lighting up at the sight of the small Pokemon.”

Upon hearing what the other's reply is, there is a small rise of her lips visible, a smirk almost - at least he isn't here to sell her any weird dreams that she has neither storage nor actual motivation for. Multiplying zero with zero nets a total worth of ... zero, after all. It feels like there is more to it, too - especially considering the many scars she's now noticing. Not exactly the poster guy of rainbow and sunshine, she would guess. Hmm ... "That seems fair," she remarks with a nod, "so ... do you like Ever Grande more or Slateport? Coming all the way here."[break]

She is almost inclined to ask more about his brother, too, but before she can properly weigh the pro's and con's of asking versus looking it up on the internet, her gaze is directed to the Grookey on her shoulder, noticing he must be mentioned and looking over to the other with a wide smile, offering his wooden stick in way of greeting - a handshake. It immediately softens her stubborn features a little, just as she turns back to the Elite Four. "Sun - the name's Sun. He's a little idiot," she says, with much affection in her voice as she pokes his nose. "And that is ...?" she looks over to the Urshifu. She never saw one before ... "Isn't handing out flyers boring for them? Or, also, like, for you."

It’s easy to chart the path of their lives, if you have an eye for it. Most of them are bright-eyed and rich enough to afford to come here. They’ve got nice futures ahead of them. Boring, but nice.[break][break]
“…but I think my people were on the other side of the tracks.” The smile tints dry, remembering life in lower Slateport. Funny how different one city can be, depending on where you go within it.[break][break]
“But I hardly ever go to Ever Grande unless it’s to check in or attend a meeting. I’m the sheriff down in Dewford. Arceus knows there’s plenty of trouble down there.” If he finds this boring, he doesn’t let it show. Shuwen gives her a rare gift: a hint of a smile. The Urshifu reaches out to try and pat Sun on the head.[break][break]
What a softie. Navy thinks.[break][break]
“Boring ain’t bad, you know. Boring’s how a warrior wants to feel.” He lies, but it’s a lie he wishes to believe. Better to have the sword rest in its scabbard than be brandished in bloody battle.

His words are ... melancholic, in a way. Thoughtful in a sense that she only encounters so often, when she brazenly blazes through her life in confident strides (and falls on her face, often enough). It makes her wonder what kind of life he led, what isn't verbalised and immortalised in the way of articles in the internet and in press media. It makes her wonder ... "Will I learn to speak cryptically, too, when I grow up?" That'd be kind of funny, though, she wonders if she'd ever make it through a life like his. "Oh, sounds fair enough, though, with Dewford and all. Do you like being a sheriff?" Right. Right. She also has to gather intel on professional obsessions![break]

The Grookey, however, is as much of a distraction as ever, and it warms her heart to see the Urshifu treat the silly being with kindness, too, eliciting a happy noise from him as he leans further over to accept the headpat. Vespa has to hold out a hand in case he'd slip from her shoulder, to keep him safe and sound.[break]
[break]
And, there he goes again. Words she'd probably frame. Maybe she should. "So you want to be bored?" she asks, curiosity in her voice. Just what is it that people other than her are going through? Is this what one would call ... sonder?

“You’ll get a whole class on how to speak in riddles when you get to college.” His smile is wry, a soldier’s smile full of dark humor that gets a man through terrible times. He does not have the heart to tell her that he’s never been to college, or even finished high school. The closest he has is an eighth grade education and a GED saying good enough, dude in big bold letters.[break][break]
“I’ll tell you this, I didn’t think I was gonna like it at first. Probably not supposed to say this, but I was never the biggest fan of cops. Kind of comes with the territory when you grow up in lower Slateport.” The cops there, especially in the old days of the Monroe administration, were as likely to hurt a poor guy living by the sea as they were to help. He’s not about to drag up that old history, even as he hints at it. “But country living’s good. I’ll tell ya this much, the air’s way better.”[break][break]
But they’re not there to talk about air, or corruption that once was. Days like today are about the future.[break][break]
Shuwen seems to fancy a future as a musician, what with the way he’s taken a pen and taps a steady rhythm against a pole. He smiles and looks at Sun. Grookies are known for their rhythm, so he tried to coax a beat out of the little one.[break][break]
“Excitement sucks in my line of work. It usually means someone’s shooting at you or ordering their Charmelon to hit you with a flamethrower. You know what’s worse than being bored? Being in a burn ward.”

There flashes a moment of intrigue over her face at the 'promise' of a riddle-speaking class before - a beat too late - realisation dawns and she musters the other with scepticism, and a hint of bemusement. "You're messing with me," she states, arms crossed, as she looks at him. This guy is kinda funny, even if he kind of tricked her. "Where did you really learn to talk like that?" she can't help but to be a little persistent however. Vespa feels like he kind of owes her now, even that is quite untrue.[break]
[break]
Yet, she nods at his further explanation - words that she can't fully understand in its depths, but ... well, notices of police brutality and suchlike aren't entirely lost on her, specifically not in history class as she wouldn't be so bold as to make a guess on how things are on the present. Yet if that's the kind of background he has ... "So, why'd you join, then, all things considered? Well, as much as I heard, anyway." Question after question ... if Fuyue were here, the Hisuian Zorua would have lost her mind over all the inquiries happening, but she is not, and there is only Sun on her shoulder, and he is overenthusiastic with the way the Urshifu is reacting - tapping against the pen with a chaotic kind of rhythm, but if one listens long enough, there is an intriguing structure to it.[break]
[break]
In the meanwhile, Vespa's face distorts to a grimace over the sheer thought of being burnt. "Wait, that actually happens? Are you really trying to sell me your job?" Her voice is a little exasperated, and quite amused, by the hint of a smirk on her face. Hah ... yeah, this guy really is funny.

His smile tells all. So many do not think to ask the questions she does. Most either pass with fleeting interest or they made up their mind to serve years before. Not her.[break][break]
“I’ll let you in on a secret. What I really want all of y’all to do is to head down there and sign up with them.” A finger flicks down to a booth a few yards down. There, a ranger in their blue beret chats with an enthusiastic group of students. ollie morales chose well, whoever this ambassador to the youth happens to be.[break][break]
“’Cause that’s good work. Clean. You’ll go to sleep feeling pretty alright with yourself at the end of the day.” He speaks against the rhythm of his country bear and the all too sunny Sun. “Nobody knows what they’re getting into when they sign up for the army. Not really. Maybe it makes me an awful salesman but hey, better that than lying.” He clears his throat.[break][break]
“That said, since the region’s at war, I’ll say you should brush up your self defense skills with the gym challenge whether you find anything else here at career day that catches your eye or not. Can’t ever be too careful.”

Eyes flicking over to the ranger booth she hasn't paid much mind to since, but it seems intriguing to give it a shot nonetheless - especially after his advertising-of-sorts, that he spoke of more convincingly in a few sentences than the minutes of talk they had about his current job. It makes her grin a little, nod, "sure, I'll check them out, too. You sure made it sound more appealing than your job." Her voice is amused, even as there is a thoughtful edge to it, too - her carefree expression turning into something more genuine (and a little bewildered over it, maybe). "Thanks for being honest, though," she clears her throat. Man ... does conversing with adults always have to be this embarrassing?[break]

Poking the Grookey on her shoulder and silently communicating that he might wanna give his goodbyes to the Urshifu, she does feel how she should maybe move on, with a line behind her and all that stuff - the day is long and she's likely just one of many he'll have to answer persistent questions for. The war ... It would be a lie to say that she wouldn't have caught anything of it, but it still seems so far off her own reality. But who really knows? "Hmm ... sounds like a sound enough plan, yeah," she only remarks with a nod.[break]

Before she makes a turn to head off to wherever it'll take her, she looks Navy stern into the face, a contemplative expression - determined, for sure. Though he has answered her questions quite so, there are still more that she is curious about - and maybe more as she treads on her path, wondering yet how she'll turn out in the end. "Hey ... when I make it far enough to beat you in a Pokémon battle, will you answer me any questions I have?"
